Shades of Drama

Dark gray sets the tone, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. White moves to light gray, charcoal and black throughout this contemporary bath, with warm brown wood slipping into the composition through the windowsill, fluted cabinetry and other slender architectural details. Beyond the windows, expansive views provide their own ever-changing counterpoint.

The designers approached those elements as a complete material scheme rather than a collection of individual choices. “Developing a cohesive palette of materials with the client is essential to good design,” says Genesis Purce, president and owner of Sarcon Construction. The same thinking informed the layout with its visually connected tub, shower, vanity, walls and floor, while attention to ergonomics helps them function as a whole.

The darker surfaces ultimately give the room its depth, but it’s the interplay among tones, wood and landscape that keeps all that drama beautifully in check.
