Designed and built by Mark Schwebel of Big Art Building, this contemporary kitchen balances clean-lined modernism with an unexpected sense of warmth. White oak cabinetry, live-edge floating shelves, Taj Mahal quartzite and silver travertine create a layered palette of soft browns and beiges that temper the home’s extensive steel construction. Rather than relying on upper cabinets, Schwebel incorporated a large service pantry, allowing the kitchen itself to remain visually open and uncluttered. Grain-matched cabinetry, which Schwebel built, with push-to-open doors and carefully concealed supports, gives both the island and perimeter cabinets a floating appearance. Overhead, a white fir ceiling milled from salvaged Lake Tahoe fire timber adds texture and character. The result is a highly tailored space where craftsmanship, materiality and restraint take center stage.
