all-day chile and cocktails with zero apologies

FORGET THE ALARM CLOCK. Forget the weekday scramble. In Albuquerque, there’s a place where the chile runs hot, the cocktails pour easy and the only question that matters is: red or green? Smothered Brunch isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a full-on mood, open every single day for those who believe breakfast deserves better than a 10 a.m. cutoff.

This concept eatery was launched in 2025 and is owned by Joe Garcia, who served as vice president of operations and chief operating officer at Weck’s for 17 years—so this man knows the power of breakfast.

This deliciously cool restaurant with an expansive menu, great music and a fun vibe has quickly grown into two locations. The original location assumed the old Vinaigrette spot downtown on Central, which now serves brunch all day every day, while the second location on Cottonwood Avenue serves until early afternoon daily.

“Smothered Brunch is modern in a retro diner way that is clean and inviting,” Garcia says. “People love that it’s Instagram-worthy. We offer exciting new menu items along with New Mexican classics, and we have a full cocktail and wine list that is also a major draw.”

Hot-ticket brunch items include chicken and waffles, as well as plenty of dishes featuring traditional New Mexican chile. Smothered Brunch makes the chile sauces without a roux, so they are naturally gluten-free. “We don’t think our recipe sacrifices flavor, and we are proud that we can offer red and green chile for everyone to enjoy,” Garcia says.

Another not-to-miss savory dish is the blue corn breakfast enchiladas filled with your choice of shredded chicken or ground beef with red or green chile. Top these enchiladas with eggs, any style, for a super-hearty meal. Of course, the classic Mexican huevos rancheros are also a beloved dish. And biscuit lovers are going to dig the scratch-made biscuits, topped with chorizo gravy or a chicken biscuit sandwich.

Those seeking something sweet will zero in on the blueberry-stuffed French toast and the churro waffles with cinnamon-sugar, topped with vanilla bean ice cream and caramel sauce. These decadent dessert-style breakfasts can also be shared and treasured by the table as a wonderful appetizer.

And let’s be real—when brunching, adult beverages are touches. “We squeeze our oranges and have some cool new cocktails on the list now that we are open at night,” Garcia says. “This includes a Red Chile Old Fashioned—we worked hard to design this. Another new cocktail is Neon Rodeo, a bourbon prickly pear lemon cocktail, and the Lavender Lemon Drop is always a hit with our customers.”

With the summer season in full swing, everyone wants to be on the patio, and the Central location offers one of the best patios in the city. It features an outdoor mimosa bar and a garden with fruit trees and flowers. Next up, there are plans for an herb garden to provide the kitchen and bar with fresh herbs.

Whether you’re rolling in at 8 a.m. for blue corn enchiladas or sliding into a booth at sunset with a Red Chile Old Fashioned in hand, Smothered Brunch delivers the kind of meal Albuquerque has been hungry for. All-day, every day—because great breakfast has no business watching the clock.
