Verdugo Custom Homes For the past five years, John and Robin Verdugo have been creating dream homes in Placitas, the same community where they chose to live when relocating to New Mexico after falling in love with the landscape and weather during a family vacation. “When I stand on a lot in Placitas, I can just envision what belongs there,” he says, "but I'd love to build in other areas as well." Both are former teachers who now work together as they build one home at a time, focusing completely on the project from beginning to finish. Robin, as licensed broker, manages the business aspects of the company while John focuses on building. With twenty-five years in the construction business, John has worked in remodeling and repairs as well as honing skills as a refinisher and carpenter. “Because I have approached homes from the other end—repairing mistakes made by other builders—it helps me avoid those mistakes before we ever start building,” says John. “From the beginning it was our goal to build green, and we’ve increased those standards in each home.” The Verdugos have continually built spec homes, which were quickly snatched up, but this year they have created an elegant 4,383-square-foot home that will be displayed on both the Homes of Enchantment Parade and the Placitas Home Tour. As members of Build Green New Mexico, the home will qualify for the Bronze certification and is filled with such features as solar heated water, a high-efficiency boiler, and other energy and water saving features. |
