O.L. Smith Contracting Not just anyone can pull off a highly urban, modern design and meld it into the desert landscape while preserving the warmth and comfort so vital for a house to become a home. Otley Smith, who has been creating award-winning modern designs in the Albuquerque area for the past few years, is one such builder. In fact, he hit a home run on the first house he and his former business partner ever built, garnering a Homes of Enchantment Parade award on a 3,000-square-foot modern design in High Desert. After a previous career in the medical waste industry, Smith says that the transition into building was an easy one. “My grandad built custom homes in El Paso, and my uncle was head of the bricklayer’s union there,” he says. “And now I am carrying on the family tradition.” Smith prides himself on being involved from the initial design stage and throughout the building process. Green building standards were incorporated into the very first home that he built. Carrying on that standard, Smith continues to build a very energy efficient home. With two spectacular homes ready for this year’s Homes of the Enchantment Parade, Smith is one of only two featured builders for the popular Parade. Says Smith, “I like the creative side of building. I like to put together houses that people appreciate and that aren’t the norm. There is a real freedom of expression through building.” Smith currently has lots available in La Cuentista and the Far Northeast Heights and can build any style of home on his or a client’s lot. |
