Preferring to build in the Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Placitas, Corrales and Bernalillo area, Dee emphasizes the importance of knowing the holistic and systematic approach in green building. “Not only do I have to build it tight to reduce heating and cooling costs, I also have to take into account indoor air quality and sustainability,” says Dee. He uses building materials that have low volatile organic compounds and mechanical air exchangers to ensure optimum indoor air quality. He says that materials that are reused or recycled and optimum value engineering techniques that reduce waste are not only good environmental stewardship practices, they can also save money during construction. ”If done right, green built structures don't have to be expensive despite the better materials and more energy efficient equipment used,” says Dee. ”Green buildings' payback period is very quick because of savings realized in lower operating and maintenance costs.”.
