Contemporary Homes of the Southwest When Richie and June Ashburn started Contemporary Homes of the Southwest 15 years ago, their previous careers made them a perfect team for the custom home building market. “I was a bookkeeper and Richie had been a framing contractor for 22 years,” says June. “We built our first home around the golf course in Rio Rancho, and all of our business associates, family and friends said we should start building homes for a living. Our moto back then—and still today—is ‘we build every house as if we were going to have to live in it ourselves.’ Richie and I are self-driven and have very high expectations for ourselves and our subcontractors, the majority of whom have worked for us for the last 15 years.” Instead of taking on several projects, June says that they prefer to work individually with only one or two clients at a time. “When our customers work with us, they have our complete attention,” she says. “We purposely plan our projects so that we can pay attention to the details. We are a very hands-on contractor.” The builders employ green building techniques where possible and work with their clients through every stage of the process, with Richie designing the perfect home and mentally framing it as he draws it by hand. Most clients build homes that are between 3,000 to 6,000 square feet and are completely custom. Their latest home, a show-stopper, is a mixture of Asian and Southwest influence located in San Pedro Creek Estates in the East Mountains and will be on the Homes of Enchantment Parade in October 2008. |
