A new look at old flames

Fireplaces bring warmth, character, romance, and style to the homes they grace. Despite their differences, these hearths exude classic Southwestern style.

A kiva fireplace brims with Santa Fe charm against the appropriate backdrop of an old adobe casita. The tiles across the top are actually a painted design created by artist Shannon Farnsworth. The treatment gains authenticity from its inspiration—a traditional Mexican tile—and an application of lacquer, which creates the illusion of decorated, glazed tiles. A cross from homeowner Robert McLeod’s collection of Mexican folk art rests on the mantle.
