DEPARTMENTS Style with
Substance
When it comes to interior design, I’m ready to go out on a limb and bet that every single one of us, given half a chance, would love to create an interior realm that is intriguing, unusual, and drenched in mystique. We’d like our visitors to enter and say, “Wow!” But even more than that, we’d also like our interior to be a genuine reflection of our deepest nature—a statement of the best in us. If only we knew how. Whereas the interior of the home should rightly be an extension of our own emotional and spiritual interior, most of us have difficulty getting past the externals of furniture, lighting, and decor. We’re trained to be shoppers, not philosophers and artists, and we’re ill-prepared to plumb the depths of our psyches or swim in the waters of our innate creativity. Yet these are the very sources that can reliably produce a home that is a second skin for your innermost being. To jump-start the process, it’s often useful to see how other people have succeeded.

For example, the ancient Mesopotamians, in addition to inventing mathematics and the written language, also built the first pyramids. These stepped ziggurats served as ceremonial ladders to the sky realm of the gods, their four sides aligned with the four directions, and they were surrounded by circular cities. Not only did the entire structure tell a symbolic story about a human community in harmony with the universe, but the structure actually helped bring the occupants back into that harmony.
