ASID and Su Casa 2003 Residential Interior Design Award
Inside New Mexico’s best interiors
Su Casa has teamed with the American Society of Interior Designers in New Mexico to bring our readers the 2003 New Mexico Residential Interior Design Awards. Su Casa was honored to participate in this revitalized design competition, which was open to all comers. And come they did. As the photos on these pages so richly illustrate, interior design is alive and well in New Mexico, spanning an unsurprisingly diverse range of styles. In keeping with this magazine’s roots and mission, we awarded the Su Casa Southwestern Style Award to Susan Westbrook (see story, page 60). Her marvelous adobe remodel epitomizes design grounded in the rich traditions of New Mexico while exploring new and unexpected twists.

Judging the first annual ASID/Su Casa Interior Design Competition were Jack Berger, Allied ASID, of Jack Berger Designs; Jan Bernson, ASID, of Jan Bernson Interior Design and Space Planning; Mary Duncan, ASID, of American Home Design Studio; Charles Poling of Su Casa; and Scotti Romberg, IIDA, of Thomasville Home Furnishings. All are designers working in New Mexico, except Poling, who edits Su Casa and now understands the difference between an interior designer and a decorator.
Listed below are the top finishers in nine categories: President’s Award, Judges’ Award, Su Casa Southwestern Style Award, living room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, dining room, and student award.

The judges gave the President’s Award to the kitchen design by Marty and Owen Nelson of Santa Fe’s Inside Out Design, citing its variety of texture and contemporary updates, such as the stone tile backsplash, three new skylights, and cabinetry by Santa Fe Door of Albuquerque. In the face of challenges typically encountered when renovating an old adobe, the Nelsons exercised considerable creativity in updating a Santa Fe classic without sacrificing its historical ambience. The kitchen includes all-new Kitchenaid appliances, new walnut floors, hand-carved island and hood, and hard-troweled walls.
