Finding Keepers
Story and photography by Julie Dean
While at friend’s house
recently I was
handed an antique
ice cream scoop. It
felt wonderful to
hold, cool and smooth, and like any
good tool, a perfect fit. And it was
beautiful. Ice cream scoops have the
classic lines of a 1940s car, a never-ending
flow of curves.
Around New Mexico, Design
Warehouse and Home at the Range
both carry contemporary Zyliss scoops,
which come in the shades of sherbet
and make scooping effortless. For a
wide selection of specialty scoops, like
small, decorative scoops or the workhorse
spade and classic dipper, visit
National Restaurant Supply Co. Inc. in
Albuquerque.
On to the ice cream, where
regional flavors and Southwestern creativity
really shine. Taos Cow Ice
Cream’s flavors such as Piñon Caramel
and Cherry Ristra are rooted in the traditions
of northern New Mexico and
made with hormone-free milk. For a
pleasant outing on a summer day, head
to the Taos Cow retail store in Arroyo
Seco, NewMexico, or stop in at any of
The Range Cafe’s locations or Santa Fe
Brewing Company, if you’re short on
time. Ski Press recently named Taos
Cow among the top five “sugar shacks”
in North America.
