Someday, when Norm and Lisa Schreifels grow old, they might recall 2006 as the year they lived in a fishbowl. For the past year, the couple, along with two active kids, has played host to several thousand visitors who weren’t content to settle for a casual stroll through the living quarters of their Corrales, New Mexico, home.

No, indeed. These are the kind of visitors who sometimes asked to see the heating bills, or to take a closer look at the variable BTU furnace, or to climb to the rooftop to examine the 2 kilowatt photovoltaic system that powers much of the home’s electrical and heating needs.

Such is life in the VISION House 2006, the first in a series of demonstration green homes to be scattered throughout the United States. New Mexico’s inaugural example reflects a collaboration between a local builder, product and systems manufacturers from across the nation, and the project sponsor, Green Builder Magazine. The many visitors have included builders, the media, subcontractors, and the general public.
