FEATURES Green comes home for good
The tipping point, critical mass, even morphic resonance—call it what you want, but clearly a significant sea change is washing across environmental issues in this country, locally and nationally. A consensus of scientists has confirmed that the global-warming impact of runaway carbon dioxide emissions demands attention—especially from anyone thinking about building a new house. Ignoring this new reality would be akin to standing in the surf, convinced nothing has changed, while the rising tide washes away all traces of yesterday. A green revolution is accelerating around the world, around the country, and around New Mexico. Just look at the homes featured on the following pages—each in its own way a stunning example of how energy efficiency, sustainable materials, and high design can blend with Southwestern style. This revolution is changing much more than style. When companies such as Alcoa, DuPont, General Electric, Lehman Brothers, and New Mexico’s own PNM Resources join forces with Environmental Defense, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the World Resources Institute in the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, you know something big must be happening. Far from doing business as usual, this diverse group called for Congress and President Bush to set mandatory limits on carbon dioxide emissions—quickly. In Washington, a recent bill introduced by Republicans and Democrats together would require industries to reduce their emissions significantly. This bipartisanship underscores the magnitude of the groundswell of support for environmental action.
