Style with substance

Every so often I get a call asking if I’m willing to take on a remodeling project. Seems like most architects just aren’t interested, whereas my experience as a designer is that remodels can be just as rewarding as new construction. Like diamonds in the rough, it’s magic to transform the ugly into the beautiful, to tease out overlooked potential, and to make an older home functional without losing the sense of place that only old structures can convey. Quite often, a seemingly intractable remodeling problem gives birth to a bold solution that you’d never hit upon in the case of new construction.

For a thoughtful designer or homeowner, remodeling is not simply a matter of ripping out old fixtures and finishes and applying a new veneer. It’s actually an opportunity to remodel yourself. This is your chance to rethink your orientation to the environment, to reshape family dynamics, and to support your personal goals and interests.

Are you a baby boomer who finally has time to indulge an interest in art or writing? Now’s the time to convert that unused bedroom into a studio. Have you been struggling to shoehorn digital reality into your analog dinosaur? Think about how you can create a home network and centralize TV, movies, music, photos, games, and office work into a family room that does it all. Maybe you have a growing passion for cooking. What about emerging health and fitness needs? Kids or grandkids?
