Piece work

Think Taj Mahal, with its sparkling gem-inlaid walls. Mosaic art in the home provides an approachable version of that majestic feeling—with a contemporary twist. Facets of color and light create radiant patterns and designs inside or outside, on fireplaces, kitchen backsplashes, walls, floors, and steps. Modern techniques produce groutless, seamless imagery that never fades. Take a look at three Albuquerque area artists—Erin Magennis, Laura Robbins, and Erin Adams—who work in this dazzling medium, each with a signature style and method all her own.

The Flower Fiesta kitchen in Greg and Cordelia Sever’s Albuquerque home showcases the mosaic art of Erin Magennis and her husband and working partner Kyle Ray. Cut, slumped, fused, and hand-painted pieces of cut glass make up the highly detailed mosaic. “The rabbit was a surprise,” recalls homeowner Greg Sever. “Then they covered it with flowers and it became sort of a ‘Where’s Waldo?’ thing.”
