What you learn about a couple when you design their house, says Santa Fe architect Steven Robinson, is as intriguing as what you learn about yourself. “Every client, every site, calls forth a whole new set of impulses and explorations,” Robinson says. “I like to take the opportunities of each situation and then challenge myself and my client to do something different and unexpected.” Opportunities and challenges were abundant when Robinson worked with Jim and Sandy Fitzpatrick to design and build the 3,916-square-foot house and 614-square-foot guest house in Tesuque, New Mexico, that the couple moved into in early 2004. The architect and clients were friends. True to Robinson’s experience, however, he learned a few new facts about the couple during the give-and-take process of building the house:
