Straight to the heart

One summer evening in Cimarron, New Mexico, Ed Pease was bemoaning his so-far luckless quest to find a piece of property for a getaway home. Over dinner with his friend Gretchen Sammis, owner of the legendary Chase Ranch, and ranch foreman Ruby Gobble, Pease described a few prospects he’d seen in town. Over the course of 10 years, he had probably looked at half a dozen. None of them felt right. Only one had drawn his serious attention, a historic property in the Village of Cimarron itself, but ultimately he felt drawn to the country.

Not much for wasted words, Sammis heard him out as the plates were cleared.

Though Pease’s former position as U.S. congressman from Indiana and his current role as a vice president with Rolls-Royce North America keep his main residence in Washington, D.C., he was looking for a slice of New Mexico heaven. He also serves in several leadership roles at the Philmont Scout Ranch, a 215-square-mile wilderness camping mecca and training center owned by the Boy Scouts of America. The ranch’s headquarters sit on the plains just south of Cimarron.

The heart-shaped stained-glass window by architect Nick Parash pays respect to the brand of the adjacent Chase Ranch, from which Pease acquired his idyllic property.
