FEATURES One
for the ages
A dramatic burnished steel sculpture representing the wings of a butterfly morphing into a curlicue seed of grama grass stands tall and dazzling at the entrance to Mariposa. From there, a gently winding, gracefully undulating four-lane parkway flanked by native plantings leads toward the village center, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Jemez, Sangre de Cristo, Ortiz, Sandia, and Manzano mountain ranges and Mount Taylor. Thus the natural and the manmade herald one’s arrival at this vast, brand-new community in Rio Rancho. That’s an appropriate expression of the philosophy behind Mariposa, where High Desert Investment Corporation intends to develop the 6,500-acre site by following the principles of sustainability—that is, by leaving the land and natural systems intact to a large degree without compromising the quality of life for future generations. As such, Mariposa is not only one of the newest large-scale communities west of the Rio Grande in central New Mexico, but a new kind of development for the region.
